Multidisciplinary Performing Artist
MIRIAM STRASSER is a multidisciplinary performance artist, clown and cultural worker based in Vienna, with an academic background in Biological Anthropology (BSc).
Born in Vienna and Spanish by choice, she has been working on projects between Austria and Spain since 2014. Her artistic practice explores the intersections of different performing arts, with a focus on interdisciplinary and hybrid performance formats.
She has worked with international companies such as Cia. MimoX Teatro and Misero Prospero Project (physical theatre), as well as with the inclusive theatre association ArtKolè. In 2016, she co-founded the art space and association La Experimental in Barcelona, where she was responsible for programming and project coordination. In Austria, she has collaborated with, among others, Will Lopes (Hybrid-Butoh-Ensemble) and the feminist theatre collective SAFT, and has presented her work at venues including Lalish Theaterlabor, Kosmos Theater Vienna, as well as in various independent and site-specific performance formats.
With a particular interest in the grotesque, she has been developing the Butoh-clown character Homo Kemoni since 2019.
Through the Homo Kemoni Project, which she founded, she develops interdisciplinary works in collaboration with international artists from different fields. These include ConTaKt, a transdisciplinary stage performance exploring the neurobiology of consciousness and bringing together artistic and scientific perspectives, as well as her latest project con_ACT, which poetically explores body memory, perception and relationships.
Alongside her artistic practice, she works as an outside-eye director and in arts education and cultural organisation. She co-founded the International Clown Lab Vienna, which she chaired until 2022. Since 2022, she has been directing the interim-use cultural project Villa.Bunter.Hund in Vienna. In 2022/23, she also worked as an assistant director and choreographic collaborator at Landestheater Niederösterreich, including 100 Years of Women’s Lives and Am Beispiel der Kohlrabi. Since 2023, she has been teaching clown and improvisational theatre at Open Acting Academy Vienna.
